  4. InterFTP is a FTP client.  Its main purpose is to transfer files between your 
  5. computer and a server or between two servers.
  6.

  61. The configuration dialog is very simple at this point.  There are only two 
  62. things that can be configured.
  63.  
  64. Email Address 
  65.  
  66. Your internet email address should be placed in this field.  The reason for 
  67. this is so that when you click on the password or login field in the address 
  68. book it can fill in the anonymous login and use your email address as a password.
  69.  
  70. Check Drive Access on Servers 
  71.  
  72. Some FTP servers are run off systems such as OS/2 or Windows that use drive 
  73. letters like C:, D:, etc.  If this option is checked then InterFTP will check 
  74. for access to the root level of all the drives on the FTP server.

  77. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Basic Program Layout ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  79. This is a bried description of the layout of InterFTP.
  80.  
  81. InterFTP is divided in to two main sides.  The left side is known as the local 
  82. side.  It contains the drive and directory structure for the local system.  The 
  83. right side is known as the remote side.  It contains all the active FTP 
  84. sessions.  Each FTP session on the right side is denoted as a branch off the 
  85. base of the list.
  86.  
  87. Below the the local and remote lists are two bars.  On the left side is the 
  88. shredder.  This is where items can be dragged in order to delete them.  On the 
  89. right hand side is the status entry for the FTP sessions.  Only one session at 
  90. a time is shown in this log.  To switch sessions either use the arrow buttons 
  91. to go through them or right click on the white part for a popup index.
  92.  
  93. Below the two lists and the bars is a log of the session.  This shows which 
  94. commands are going to the server and the replies it is sending back.  Only one 
  95. server at a time is displayed in this log.  To see a different server in the 
  96. log window right click for a popup index or use the arrow buttons as described above.

  98. Finally there are the adjuster bars.  These help to configure how much of each 
  99. list or the log that will be displayed.  These bars are proportional so if the 
  100. window is resized the same percentage for each part will still show.  The 
  101. positions of the bars are saved upon exit and will take effect the next time 
  102. the program loads.

  105. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Address Book ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  106.  
  107. The address book is where FTP sites are stored.  It allows for password storing 
  108. and configuration of how InterFTP will act once it connects to the server.
  109.  
  110. The sites list is organized in a "Tree View" where folders and subfolders can 
  111. exist.  In each folder can be an unlimited number of FTP site entries.
  112.  
  113. The entries in the sites list can be dragged from one folder to another and 
  114. they will move.  Folders can be dragged to any other folder except child 
  115. folders and they will also move.
  116.  
  117. Below are some comments about the addition of new sites.
  118.  
  119. If the description field is not filled in then the address for the site will 
  120. appear in the list to the left.
  121.  
  122. If you double clich in either the login or password field it will automaticly 
  123. fill in the login field with the word anonymous and the password field with 
  124. your email address.  Make sure your email address has been entered in the 
  125. configuration dialog.
  126.  
  127. The local and remote directory fields specify the starting locations in the 
  128. list once InterFTP connects to the server.
  129.  
  130. The script is the full path to an InterFTP script.  See Scripting for more information.
  131.  
  132. Save Dir Tree will save the entire directory tree of the server upon logout if 
  133. checked.  This will allow for faster navigation of the site upon your next connection.
  134.  
  135. Enable Firewall will make all connection passive to the server.  This should be 
  136. checked if you are behind a firewall.
  137.  
  138. Server full redial will reattempt connecting to the server if it is full.

  141. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Drag and drop ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  142.  
  143. Drag and drop is used throughout InterFtp.  There are certains ways that 
  144. different objects can be dragged.  If these shortcuts get confusing there are 
  145. always right click popup menus that are available for each item in the list. 
  146. Some drag operations are effected by the CTRL,  ALT, or SHIFT key being held 
  147. down.  Below is an explaination of these keys effect.
  148.  
  149. CTRL: The operation will be performed recursively to all the files.  Paths will 
  150. be preserved for some operations such as PUT.
  151.  
  152. ALT: The operation will be performed recursively to all the files.  Paths will 
  153. not be preserved for some operations such as PUT.

  155. SHIFT: The operation will be performed to only the tagged files.  The SHIFT key 
  156. can be held down in conjunction with the CTRL or ALT key.

  227. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Server to Server (FXP) Transfers ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  228.  
  229. One of the neatest features of InterFTP to use is the FXP support.  Using FXP 
  230. means that you are transferring files directory from one server to another 
  231. without the data passing through your machine.  For people with slow internet 
  232. connections this can be a drastic advantage.  Usually this feature is used to 
  233. pull data from a remote server to an FTP server that your Internet Server 
  234. Provider (ISP) runs.  Then you can download it from this site which is closer 
  235. and will provide for a faster transfer time.
  236.  
  237. Below is a basic outline of how FXP transfers should be conducted.
  238.  
  239. First off you need to be connected to at least two FTP servers.  Next load a 
  240. directory of files on one of the servers by either dragging them or use the 
  241. right click menus to add the files to the FXP Queue.  Then go to a directory on 
  242. the other server.  Either drag the FXP Queue icon on top of this directory if 
  243. they are both visible on the page, or right click on the target directory and 
  244. choose upload FXP queue.

  247. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Scripting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  248.  
  249. InterFTP has basic scripting abilities to allow you to automate those tasks 
  250. that must be repetitively done.  The script file is specified in the address 
  251. book for each site.  In the script field simply put the complete path to the 
  252. location of the script.

  254. The script file is simply a plain text file.  Each line is a command that is 
  255. executed one after another.  Below is a list of the commands and the parameters 
  256. for them.

  258. BINARY 
  259.  
  260. Sets the current transfer mode to binary.
  261.  
  262. ASCII 
  263.  
  264. Sets the current transfer mode to ascii.
  265.  
  266. CDREMOTE <path>
  267.  
  268. Changes the current directory on the remote drive to the specified path.  All 
  269. other commands such as MGET *.* would take place from this directory.  It is 
  270. highly recommended that this command be issued at least once in each script.

  272. CDLOCAL <path>
  273.  
  274. Changes the current directory on the local drive to the specified path.  All 
  275. other commands such as MPUT *.* would be taken from this directory.
  276.  
  277. GET <filename>
  278.  
  279. Gets a file from the remote system and stores it on the local system in the 
  280. directory specified from the last CDLOCAL command.

  282. PUT <filename>
  283.  
  284. Puts a file from the local system to the remote system in the directory 
  285. specified from the last CDREMOTE command.

  287. MGET <spec> <R>
  288.  
  289. This command gets a wildcard full of files that match the specification.  If 
  290. the R is specified as the second parameter then it will do a recursive GET.
  291.  
  292. MPUT <spec> <R>
  293.  
  294. This command puts a wildcard full of files that match the specification.  If 
  295. the R is specified as the second parameter then it will do a recursive PUT.

  297. QUIT

  299. This command will logout of the FTP server and shut down InterFTP once all 
  300. other FTP sessions are finished.

  302. MKDIR <path>
  303.  
  304. This command will make the specified path on the remote server.
  305.  
  306. RMDIR <path>
  307.  
  308. This command will remove the specified path on the remote server.  The path 
  309. must be entirely empty of files.  If subdirectories exist and are empty they 
  310. will also be removed.

  312. DELDIR <path>
  313.  
  314. This command will delete all the files in the directory specified by the path parameter.
  315.  
  316. DEL <filename>
  317.  
  318. This command will delete the filename specified as the parameter.
  319.  
  320. MDEL <spec> <R>
  321.  
  322. This command will delete all the files that match the specification.  If the R 
  323. parameter is specified it will delete all the files recursively.

  325. LOGOUT 
  326.  
  327. This command will logout of the FTP server.

  329. WAIT <milliseconds>
  330.  
  331. This command will cause InterFTP to wait a certain number of milliseconds 
  332. (specified in that parameter) until it continues with the script.  The number 
  333. of milliseconds should not exceed 30000.

  351. Bugs are bound to happen in every program and the only way to get them fixed is 
  352. if the users report them.  To fix a bug we need an effective bug report.  Below 
  353. are a list of components that we need for a bug report to be effective and 
  354. allow us to fix it.
  355.  
  356. 1. What FTP server where you logged in to?  Please provide the actual address 
  357. so we can perform the login.
  358.  
  359. 2. Was the login anonymous?
  360.  
  361. 3. What action where you performing that caused the bug.  Was the action you 
  362. performed on a file, directory, or link?
  363.  
  364. 4. What error messages did you see in the log?
  365.  
  366. 5. Did the program produce any SYS error messages?
  367.  
  368. 6. Make sure your email has a valid return address so we can respond to you and 
  369. let you know the status of the fix.

  371. Types of bugs you might find:
  372.  
  373. Simple bugs in InterFTP are bound to occur because there are many FTP servers 
  374. out there.  Each of these servers has a characteristic way of acting.  Since 
  375. there are so many server types available we could not find and test them all. 
  376. However, nugs related to unsupported server types of easily fixed.  Eventually 
  377. every type of FTP server will be found and correctly supported.
